Alkebulan Garden at Lopez Farm

Workdays Every Saturday mornings form 10a-12p

The Alkebulan Garden (at Lopez Urban Farm) was created for the express purpose of providing a safe place for all Black people of the African diaspora in the Inland Southern Communities and Los Angeles County to learn about, and reconnect to their ancestral crops and food, and agricultural practices. It is a place for preserving African seeds, as well as seeds that are culturally relevant to the people of the diaspora. Alkebulan is the oldest known name for the continent of Africa, the Garden of Eden and Mother of Mankind. As such the Alkebulan Garden is a space of reclamation and of decolonial praxis, of community making and building, and of celebrating the diaspora food systems; a place for sharing stories and traditions, the magic of the land, the people –the culture. It is a space to showcase the crop diversity, the richness, and abundance of African food systems.

Additionally, it is a green space seeking to address food apartheid (racially discriminatory, political, and economic factors that produce food deprivation and have been mostly ignored by the mainstream). It contributes to equalizing access to healthy foods, and helps mitigate racial and socioeconomic disparities. It can empower and give our community a sense of control over our food systems.

Be in Community with us at the Alkebulan Garden at Lopez Urban Farm!

Uncommon Good

Uncommon Good, a local non-profit that empowers low-income families by promoting health, education, and environmentalism, will be hosting monthly workshops for high school seniors in our community, of whom are primarily Black and Brown youth. These workshops are centered on providing writing support and feedback on their college essays and supplemental questions.

We're looking for a few more volunteers to help us so that we can provide as much attention and support as possible. We believe that college students' experience with this process will be invaluable in offering some guidance to our high school students.

Build Tiny Homes for Displaced Californians

When Jimmy Cater lost his election, he built houses. Quite frankly, there are a lot of reasons to build houses. Tiny homes are great, because we can pick them up and drive them wherever!

We plan to get all of the climate victims of California in accommodations that keep them dry and warm.

When their land gets cleared up, we can put that tiny home right on their property while they rebuild, or simply enjoy their new home.

So wherever you are, if you want to pound some nails and help some people stay warm through the winter, let us know. We can build tiny homes across the nation, or help gather supplies!
